Van Aert took first position in the bunch sprint, followed by Van Den Broek in second. We anticipated that the first stage of the Tour de France this year would be difficult.
However, many riders found the uphill, Classics-style stage from Florence to Rimini to be a tough Grand Depart. The peloton mounted a confused chase, hoping to set up punchy riders such as Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), but in the end, the escape emerged victorious in an unexpected finale. But they had a bad day.
Frank deserved this victory just as much as I did because he was so powerful and we could work together to achieve our goals. Really, I’m at a loss for words. Bardet stated in the post-race interview, “It’s sport.”
It was quite difficult up there. We were facing a very unusual situation because it was hot and we could feel the breeze on our faces.
“Obviously, wearing the yellow jersey is one of my career goals.” I’ve previously been extremely close. Although it’s been close enough to touch, I’ve never managed to pull it off,” Bardet continued.
“I simply didn’t think it would be possible to happen today.” However, I had a fantastic teammate. And I believe that when I look back on this win, I’ll recognize how unique it was.
Notably, Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) was lost by the peloton on the first climb. After that, he was joined by four colleagues, including sprinter Fabio Jakobsen (dsm–firmenich PostNL), who had been providing medical attention to him during the stage.
At the finish, this group was more over thirty-two minutes behind the peloton. Tour de France 2024.
A flat tire and a hasty bike change at the beginning of the race were two more notable events. Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) also shared an intense, crying moment during a pre-race interview.
Another member of his squad, Wilco Kelderman, was later seen with road rash and bandages on his left side, suggesting that he too had been in an accident at some point during the stage.
There were no surprises among the General Classification contenders as all the big favorites finished in the peloton, with the exception of UAE Team Emirates’ Tadej Pogačar, who managed to finish in fourth place.
