Powerlifting Paralympics 2024। One world record, two paralympic records but no French medal

Powerlifting Paralympics 2024। One world record, two paralympic records but no French medal. The two French competitors competing in today’s different categories, Alex Adelaïde and Axel Bourlon, both finished below sixth place, with the former failing to place after three attempts.

Two Paralympic records and one world record were broken in the women’s competitions. This is a synopsis of the Parapowerlifting day.

He and his pectorals held the highest expectations for a medal. Axel Bourlon, a 2021 Paralympic silver medallist, was hailed as a hero at the Arena Porte de La Chapelle.

The man from Roanne had a different vibe from the tifo in blue, white, and red, the many flags, and the clamor of the throng.

Before making his first effort, he sat on the bench and went into his zone by closing his eyes for thirty seconds. The once-raucous assembly became silent in observance.

Unfortunately, two of the three judges disqualified his initial effort at 163 kilograms. He would have to do better on the second lift, as the video challenge validated the decision.

In the meantime, David Degtyarev of Kazakhstan won the tournament after clearing his first lift at 184 kg. An Nguyen of Vietnam withdrew after his initial effort at 168 kg was unsuccessful.

Axel Bourlon made the decision to raise the weight for his retry after realizing that his rating had dropped. “We don’t really understand the decision on the first lift; I felt comfortable with that weight, which is why I chose to increase,” he stated to the journalists.

With the lift of 169 kg, he might have finished in provisional fifth place. All three judges invalidated his execution, despite his right arm being badly controlled. Once more, the result was upheld by the video challenge.

Bourlon knew he had lost his chance and buried his head in his hands. He would not step back onto the podium after Tokyo. Even worse, he failed at his third attempt, which came at 169 kg. There would be no ranking for Axel Bourlon.

Ultimately, Jinglang Yang (China, 179 kg) and Pablo Ramirez Barrientos (Cuba, 185 kg) were defeated by Kazakhstan’s David Degtyarev (188 kg).

In His Debut Powerlifting Competition, Alex Adelaïde Places Sixth

With his first lift of 160 kg, Alex Adelaïde could only manage a sixth-place result in the first session of the day.

The Guadeloupean then lost his second try at 165 kg because the judges were unable to confirm the lift because of a small delay in his push. He gambled on a 172-kilogram lift for his last try, which, if successful, would have put him on the provisional podium.

But he faltered once more, letting his rivals take the upper hand. After competing in Para athletics at the Rio Games and winning a bronze medal in the 4×400 meter relay, Adelaïde had to make do with this outcome in his Para powerlifting debut. He intends to pursue atonement in Los Angeles in 2028.

Le Van Cong of Vietnam, Abdullah Kayapinar of Turkey, and Omar Sami Hamadeh Qarada of Jordan fought for the title of ultimate victor. It was the latter that gave way first, at 176 and then 181 kg.

By contrast, both of his competitors were over 180 kg. With a lift of 181 kilos, Omar Sami Hamadeh Qarada ultimately took first place. A few minutes later, he tried to lift 184 kg, but was unable to surpass the world record of 183.5 kg.

In the Women’s Competition, Records Drop

Zhen Cui set a new Paralympic record and won the Paralympic title in the women’s under 41-kilogram division, earning a double victory.

She was unable to surpass the current world record, which stands at 123 kilograms. With this first gold medal, the 37-year-old Chinese athlete finally broke the curse, having won silver in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2021.

She beat Brazil’s Lara Aparecida de Lima (109 kilograms) and Nigeria’s Esther Nworgu (118 kilograms) with a lift of 119 kg.

Lingling Guo of China, the Paralympic under 41kg champion, broke the world record in the second women’s category, the under 45kg. She broke the existing world and Paralympic records with a bar of 123 kg.

The podium was completed by Zoé Newson (Great Britain) and Nazmiye Muratli (Turkey) behind her. Powerlifting Paralympics 2024। One world record, two paralympic records but no French medal.
