With party rules making it almost impossible for him to be replaced on the ticket without his consent, it has become evident how much of that decision is left up to Biden alone, especially considering the short amount of time he has left to make it.

In order to meet an Ohio deadline that had threatened to keep Biden off the ballot there, a virtual roll call for the nomination is scheduled for August 7, even before the convention officially opens.

However, a poll conducted by CBS News and YouGov on Friday and Saturday revealed that the debate had made the 81-year-old Biden’s age—his greatest vulnerability—more apparent. According to 72% of eligible voters, he lacks the mental and cognitive capacity to be president. The same proportion, comprising 36% of Democrats, felt he had no business seeking the presidency.
